Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter about a woman the whole town decided to punish forever for one mistake, marking her out in public so nobody could forget it, and I think that book still lands because most of us have watched somebody get judged like that in real life — one bad year turned into their whole reputation. I've had people look at me a certain way because I'm running between a discount store, a delivery app, and three houses I clean on weekends, like the schedule itself says something bad about my choices instead of my bills. Hawthorne was writing about 19th-century New England, a totally different world, but he understood something that hasn't changed: people love deciding who somebody is based on the worst or hardest thing about their life, instead of the whole of it. He made that judgment the actual villain of the story, not the woman wearing the letter. That's a braver thing to write than it probably gets credit for, especially that long ago. Some lessons just don't go out of style.
