I'll admit Naomi Klein writes about things well outside my usual reading — globalization and climate change, with books like 'No Logo' and 'This Changes Everything' that folks tell me were genuinely influential in how people think about those subjects. I've got eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren now, and whatever a body thinks about the particulars of any of that, I do find myself thinking more and more about what kind of world gets left for all of them once I'm gone, same as I imagine a lot of grandmothers my age do these days. Writing books serious enough to actually shift how people talk about big, complicated subjects takes a particular kind of persistence, the same persistence I tried to teach in my own small classroom for thirty-eight years — you don't change anybody's mind by shouting once, you change it slowly, with real evidence, laid out patiently enough that people can actually follow along and come to their own conclusion. Whatever else is true, that kind of patient, serious work deserves respect on its own terms.
