Fashion's about as far from a truck cab as an industry gets, so I'll say upfront I don't have much natural feel for what makes a supermodel career like Naomi Campbell's actually significant beyond the obvious — one of the original 'supermodels' of the 1990s, still recognized now for humanitarian and mentorship work within the industry on top of that. I hold two different feelings about that world at once, honestly: some genuine skepticism about how much of it is real substance versus surface, and real respect for the fact that staying relevant that long, across decades of an industry famous for discarding people the second they age out of whatever's trendy, clearly requires more than just having been photogenic once in the '90s. The mentorship part is the piece that actually lands for me, since it means she used the staying power to open a door for whoever's coming up behind her instead of just holding onto the spotlight herself. I can hold both of those feelings honestly without picking one side, and I think that's usually the fairest way to read a career from way outside your own lane.
