Mia Hamm (b. 1972)

I've driven through more small towns with a soccer field as the only lit-up thing at eight o'clock on a weeknight than I can count, and Mia Hamm's the reason half of them exist in the shape they do — two-time Olympic gold medalist, World Cup champion, one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport. There's a particular kind of impact where somebody doesn't just win, they change what an entire country decides is worth building fields and leagues for afterward, and I think that's closer to what Hamm actually did than any single medal count captures on its own. I've watched that shift happen out my windshield over twenty-two years on the road — towns that had nothing for girls' sports when I started hauling freight, and now have full leagues and lit fields on a Tuesday night. I can't prove the connection is direct, careful there, but it's hard not to notice the timing. Some careers change a scoreboard. Hers seems to have changed a landscape, one small-town field at a time, whether she ever meant to or not.
