Mia Farrow (b. 1945)

Mia Farrow's had a decades-long career on film and stage, 'Rosemary's Baby' being the one most people know, but it's the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador work that stays with me longer than any single role would. My daughter recently started asking pointed questions about why her two grandmothers 'don't talk the same way,' which has had me thinking all summer about heritage and how differently people carry the world's harder realities depending on what they've actually witnessed up close. I imagine humanitarian work does something similar to a person — you can't do that kind of work for real, over years, without it changing how you see everything else in your life afterward, your acting career included. There's a version of celebrity humanitarian work that's mostly for show, and I have no way of knowing where any specific person falls on that spectrum from the outside. But sustaining that role for a long stretch, on top of an already demanding career, suggests it mattered to her beyond the optics. That's the kind of layered life I find myself paying more attention to lately.
