Judgment at Nuremberg is heavier subject matter than most of what I watch these days — I lean toward Hallmark movies and old hymns for my evening entertainment — but I understand Maximilian Schell won an Academy Award for his part in it, which tells me he handled some genuinely difficult material with real skill and seriousness rather than shying away from it. There's something to be said for an actor willing to take on hard, uncomfortable history instead of easier, more crowd-pleasing roles, the same way I always respected the substitute teachers willing to take my toughest classroom instead of the easy one. Winning that kind of recognition for serious dramatic work, in a film built around such weighty subject matter, isn't the same as being simply popular; it means his peers judged the work itself to be genuinely excellent. I don't watch pictures like that often, but I have a lasting respect for performers who use their gift on the hard stories instead of only the comfortable ones, because somebody has to be willing to tell them well.
