Marina Tsvetaeva is regarded as one of the greatest Russian poets of the twentieth century, known for intense, lyrical verse that people are still reading and translating a hundred years later, which is a strange kind of staying power for words written under conditions that were, from what I understand, genuinely difficult for most of her life. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts during long delivery shifts, which is honestly how I first started paying attention to writers and their actual lives rather than just their reputations, and poets like her stick with you because the work clearly cost something real to make. I don't have much patience for poetry that feels decorative, but lyrical verse that survives a century because it was true rather than pretty, that I understand and respect. Nobody handed her that reputation; it held up because the writing itself held up, generation after generation of readers deciding, independently, that it mattered.
