Marina Silva grew up in poverty in Brazil and became one of the world's leading voices for protecting the Amazon rainforest, eventually earning the Right Livelihood Award for it, and this is the kind of story that genuinely moves me, someone starting with nothing and ending up defending something as enormous as an entire rainforest ecosystem. I immigrated here alone at 24 with very little myself, sent money home for a decade before my family could join me, so I have a real feeling for what it costs, personally, to build something meaningful when you started with almost no resources at all. Protecting the Amazon isn't a quiet job either — it's the kind of advocacy that puts a target on you, and she kept doing it anyway. I see a version of that same stubborn devotion in my hospice patients sometimes, people who fight for something bigger than their own comfort right up until the very end. Silva's still out there fighting for hers while she's living it, which is its own kind of grace.
