Louise Erdrich is a National Book Award-winning novelist whose work draws deeply on her Ojibwe heritage to explore Native American life and history, and I confess this is precisely the sort of profile that makes my usual genealogical enthusiasms feel rather small by comparison. I spend a good deal of my time tracing old family lines back to the 1650s or occasionally to a minor Italian title several generations removed, treating it, I'll admit, as a delightful parlor game more than anything of real consequence. Erdrich's work does something considerably more serious with heritage ā using it to illuminate an entire history that institutions like the ones I sit on the boards of have not always told honestly, or told at all. I find myself genuinely humbled reading about a body of work built on ancestry that mattered in ways mine, whatever its old ledgers claim, has never once had to prove itself against. One learns, slowly and later than one would like, which family stories were simply inherited and which had to be fought for.
