Louise Brooks (1906-1985)

Louise Brooks was one of the great faces of the silent film era, a dancer and an actress whose bobbed haircut alone became a whole style movement, decades before anyone had a word for 'iconic.' What strikes me, working in healthcare where I see a lot of women who never got recognized properly for their gifts in their own time, is how many silent-era actresses like her only got their full due much later, once people looked back and finally understood what they'd actually done. I think of my own mother that way sometimes, quiet talents nobody wrote down properly at the time. Brooks apparently kept her presence and her particular style so distinctive that it outlasted the entire silent film era itself, still influencing how people think about screen glamour today. I don't watch much silent film myself — give me a Filipino teleserye with my mother any day — but I respect a woman whose look became a lasting symbol long after the medium that made her famous had already moved on without her.
