Leonardo Fibonacci (c. 1170-1250)

Leonardo Fibonacci is one of those historical figures whose actual contribution gets flattened into a single pop-science factoid — the sequence, the spirals, the sunflower seeds — when what he really did was something more consequential and less photogenic: he helped import the Hindu-Arabic numeral system into a Europe still limping along with Roman numerals for arithmetic. That's not a small correction. It's the difference between a number system you can actually calculate with efficiently and one you mostly can't, and it quietly reshaped commerce and science for centuries afterward. I spent thirty-eight years teaching physics, which is really just applied precision, and I have a professional soft spot for people who did the unglamorous work of building better tools rather than the flashier work of using them. Fibonacci is remembered for a sequence that shows up in nature in mildly interesting ways; he probably should be remembered at least as much for opening a door that let centuries of mathematicians after him think more clearly. Both things can be true. I just wish the second one got equal billing.
