LeBron James (b. 1984)

LeBron James grew up without much stability in Akron, and instead of forgetting where he came from once the money and the championships arrived, he built a school for kids living the way he once lived — free tuition, free meals, real support, not just a photo opportunity. I've spent nearly three decades in hospitals and hospice rooms, and if there's one thing I've learned it's that what a family sacrifices for a child rarely shows up in the highlight reel. Someone sacrificed for LeBron once. Now the I PROMISE School is his way of doing that for somebody else's kids, at scale, tens of millions of dollars deep. My daughter is in medical school now, and I tell her: talent opens the door, but it's what you do once you're inside the house that people remember. LeBron James is remembered, in Akron, for staying in the house and building more rooms for others. That is a legacy worth having.
