James Madison was the kind of student I'd have loved to have in my third-grade classroom — quiet, careful, always doing the reading nobody assigned. He didn't have the booming voice of some of the other Founders, but he sat through that long, hot Philadelphia summer in 1787 taking notes nobody made him take, and because of it we actually know how our Constitution came together. I think about the boys I taught who never raised their hand but always had the answer — Madison strikes me as one of those. He spent years arguing that no single branch of government should get too big for its britches, checks and balances, same principle I taught with a hall pass and a raised eyebrow. He went on to be our fourth President and helped write the Bill of Rights besides. My grandkids say civics is boring. I tell them: somebody has to do the quiet, patient work, or nothing holds together. Madison did that work.
