Some careers you can build in layers, like a good cake, and some careers only make sense the way Kathryn D. Sullivan's does — geologist, astronaut, first American woman to walk in space, and eventually the first person ever to reach both space and the deepest point in the ocean. That's not a layer cake, honestly, that's more like baking one thing entirely, then turning around and mastering the total opposite, and being world-class at both. My whole professional life is thin margins and one very specific craft, so a résumé that spans the literal highest and lowest points on Earth kind of breaks my brain in a good way. I think about my bakery's two near-closures a lot when I read a story like this — not because the scale compares, it obviously doesn't, but because there's something in common between 'push all the way to one extreme, survive it, then go push toward the opposite extreme' that feels true no matter the field. Sullivan didn't pick a lane and stay in it. She built two completely different kinds of expertise and used both.
