Kathryn Bigelow being the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar hits different when you actually sit with how long 'first' took to happen — like, the Oscars had been around for decades before a woman won for directing, and it was 'The Hurt Locker,' a war movie, that finally did it. I think about that a lot in a very specific, personal way, because war isn't an abstract movie genre to my family, it's the reason my parents left Baghdad in 2006 and the reason I exist in Dearborn instead of somewhere else. I'm not saying Bigelow's film experience maps onto that, obviously, that would be reaching — I'm saying that watching someone tell a hard, unglamorous story about conflict and get real recognition for the craft of it, not despite the subject but because she handled it seriously, means something to me. Okay, wait, I'm getting a little too in-my-feelings for what's supposed to be a quick profile. Bottom line: 'first woman to win Best Director' should not have taken that long, and she earned every bit of it regardless.
