Judith Light (b. 1949)

Judith Light is an Emmy and Tony-winning actress, well known for Who's the Boss?, but what I find most worth noting, and what perhaps deserves more attention than the television credits, is her decades-long advocacy work around HIV and AIDS awareness, undertaken during years when public sympathy on that subject was in shorter supply than it should have been. I spent thirty-eight years as a physics professor mentoring students, many of them entering fields that weren't always eager to make room for them, so I recognize a particular kind of courage in someone using visibility for something more consequential than their own career, especially when the timing carries real professional risk. Rigor and evidence matter enormously to me, but so does the willingness to speak plainly when a subject makes people uncomfortable rather than waiting for consensus to arrive first. Light did that publicly, for years, well before it was an easy or fashionable position to hold. That is worth more, in my assessment, than any individual award on the shelf.
