Isabel Marant (b. 1967)

Isabel Marant built an influential ready-to-wear label defined by a relaxed, effortlessly chic aesthetic, which as a designer myself is basically my dream sentence to have written about my own work someday — "effortless" being the hardest possible thing to actually design, because it requires hiding an enormous amount of deliberate work under something that reads as casual. I think in composition and color for a living, and "relaxed but chic" is a much harder brief to execute consistently across an entire label than something more maximalist or rule-bound would be; there's nowhere to hide a mistake in a silhouette that's supposed to look unstudied. New motherhood has actually made me appreciate this more, honestly, since most of my current wardrobe is "does this survive spit-up and still look like I tried," which gives me a whole new respect for anyone who can make ease look genuinely stylish on purpose. Marant clearly built a visual signature disciplined enough to be recognizable while still looking like she wasn't trying too hard. That's real skill.
