Isabel Allende is one of the best-selling novelists writing in Spanish, period, with "The House of the Spirits" as the book that put her on the map worldwide, and she wrote it, famously, starting as a letter to her dying grandfather that just kept growing. I'm second-generation Indian-American myself, and there's something about immigrant-family storytelling — the way a whole history gets folded into one person's memory and then has to get written down before it disappears — that hits differently when it's your own family's shape, even if the details don't match at all. My parents left Bangalore in the eighties with a completely different story than Allende's Chilean one, but the instinct to preserve it, to make sure it doesn't just evaporate with one generation, feels familiar. She turned personal and political upheaval into some of the most widely read fiction on the planet. That's not just talent, that's a kind of stubborn love for where you came from that I recognize even from a totally different family tree.
