Howard Carter (1874-1939)

Howard Carter spent years, by most accounts, searching before he ever found Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, and that's the part of the story that sticks with me more than the gold and the headlines afterward — a man doing patient, unglamorous digging for a very long stretch before anything paid off. That's a familiar rhythm to anybody who's worked a trade; you put in years of steady effort before the big result shows up, if it ever does, and plenty of guys I worked with never got their one big payoff at all despite putting in the same kind of years. Becoming one of the most celebrated archaeological finds in history doesn't happen to somebody who gives up after the first few disappointing seasons of digging, which I suspect were plenty. I've got real respect for people who stick with slow, careful work most others would've walked away from years earlier, whether that's an archaeological dig or thirty-four years on a mill floor waiting to see if the pension actually held up.
