Harriet Walter (b. 1950)

Harriet Walter is known now for "Succession" but built a long career on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company well before that, which tells me the visible, famous part of her career came a long time after the actual grinding, skill-building years most people never see or credit. That's the part of any career I always notice — how many years, how many unglamorous jobs, came before the one that finally gets talked about. I've worked plenty of jobs myself that nobody outside my own family ever heard of before I finally landed something steadier, and I always wonder about the people whose "before" never gets mentioned at all. Walter's stage work with the RSC was clearly serious, sustained craft, not a stepping stone she was just waiting to get past. It's easy to only talk about someone once they're famous and skip the fifteen, twenty years it actually took to get good enough to be famous for something. She earned "Succession" the long way, same as most people earn anything worth having.
