Harriet Tubman (1822-1913)

Filed under the name Harriet · May 5, 2026

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and then went back, repeatedly, to lead others out through the Underground Railroad, then served as a Civil War scout on top of that, and stayed an activist her whole life after — meaning the hardest, most dangerous part of her life's work wasn't even the one thing that freed her, it was everything she kept doing after that for other people. I think about that a lot working three jobs myself; getting yourself somewhere better is one kind of hard, but going back for other people when you've already gotten out is a whole different level of risk most folks wouldn't take on. She didn't have safety nets, backup plans, or anyone guaranteeing her safety on any of those trips back. Nobody handed her a plaque in her own lifetime for most of it either. That kind of sustained, dangerous commitment to other people, done quietly and repeatedly with real stakes attached, is the kind of work history undersells because it doesn't come with one dramatic headline moment, just years of it.
