Gwen Ifill (1955-2016)

Gwen Ifill became the first Black woman put in the anchor chair of a major national politics broadcast, a milestone I recognize the particular weight of, having been one of very few Black women in my own doctoral cohort at Cornell decades ago and having spent much of my subsequent career mentoring students navigating similarly narrow doors. Journalism is not my field, but rigor and evidence-based clarity are qualities I can assess regardless of discipline, and Ifill was, by all respected accounts, exacting in exactly that way — the kind of reporter who let facts, carefully checked, do the work rather than performance. I was passed over for department chair twice under circumstances I believe were shaped by race and gender, though I cannot prove it, and that old, occasional bruise colors how I read anyone's 'first' in a serious field: the credential is never merely personal, it opens a door that other people then walk through for decades afterward, often without ever knowing her name. That, more than the milestone itself, strikes me as her lasting contribution.
