Greta Garbo (1905-1990)

Greta Garbo was this legendary, almost mythically luminous screen presence during Hollywood's golden age, the kind of old-school movie star whose whole aura I only really know through clips my mom shows me, not through actually growing up with her the way older generations did. There's something about that era of stardom ā mysterious, controlled, way less "extremely online" than literally everything now, myself very much included ā that feels almost impossible to imagine existing today. I catch myself getting nostalgic for a version of fame I never actually lived through, which is a very internet-generation thing to do, romanticizing an era specifically because it had none of the exposure ours has. Garbo reportedly craved privacy in a way that would be basically unachievable now, and I think about that a lot given how much of my own life, including a viral moment I really did not enjoy, ended up publicly dissected against my will. Sometimes the old mystery sounds genuinely restful.
