I never finished community college, dropped out for money and got my CDL instead, so I've built most of what I know about history and ideas out of audiobooks over twenty-two years of long hauls, which is its own kind of self-taught education even if nobody hands you a diploma for it. Eugenia Cheng is a mathematician and author known for making advanced mathematics genuinely accessible to general audiences through her books and lectures, which is exactly the kind of work I owe a debt to, honestly, even in a different field — people who take something dense and specialized and translate it so a guy in a truck cab with no formal training past high school can actually follow along and get something real out of it. That's a specific, undervalued skill, translation like that, making the complicated stuff legible without dumbing it down into nothing. I've got a lot of respect for anybody doing that work, in math or history or anywhere else, because it's the reason people like me get access to ideas we'd otherwise never have had a door into at all.
