👶 Naming for:

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)

I'll confess my first instinct with a name like Roosevelt is genealogical delight — old American family, considerable standing, the sort of pedigree I could happily trace for an afternoon over tea. But Eleanor Roosevelt's actual accomplishment rather outpaces her lineage, and I ought to correct my own instinct here rather than dwell on it. As First Lady and later a diplomat, she helped draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, work that required years of genuinely difficult negotiation among people who did not agree on much, and she is remembered, rightly, as a tireless advocate for human rights and social reform well beyond what her position alone would have required of her. Plenty of people in comparable circumstances to hers have done considerably less with the platform available to them; I include myself in that reckoning more than I'd like to. What I find myself admiring is that she treated the position as an obligation to actually accomplish something, rather than simply to occupy it gracefully, which is a distinction I try, not always successfully, to hold myself to as well.
