Eleanor Catton (b. 1985)

I do a lot of my reading through audiobooks these days, hours and hours of it on long stretches of highway, and somewhere along the way I picked up a genuine soft spot for anybody who wins something like the Booker Prize young, the way Eleanor Catton did for 'The Luminaries,' becoming the youngest-ever winner of that particular prize. There's a kind of quiet confidence it takes to write something that ambitious at a young age and have serious literary judges take it seriously rather than patronize the effort, which I imagine is its own hurdle separate from just writing the book well in the first place. I never finished my own run at community college, dropped out for money reasons and got a CDL instead, so books and history became something I built for myself out of audiobooks over twenty-some years on the road rather than a classroom. Stories like Catton's remind me the actual work of getting good at something doesn't require anybody's permission or the right institution behind you — just enough discipline to see it through, wherever you happen to be doing it from.
