Edith Piaf (1915-1963)

I'm usually talking sports metaphors with my players, but Edith Piaf's story has that same underdog shape I look for in any comeback tale — a voice that powerful coming out of a hard early life and turning into something that turned her into an icon adored across generations across an entire country. 'La Vie en Rose' is one of those performances where you can hear everything a person's been through underneath the polish, kind of like watching a kid who grew up with nothing finally get his shot and make every second of it count. I run a free summer basketball camp for neighborhood kids because I believe talent shows up everywhere, regardless of what a person started with, and Piaf's career is proof that gift finds its way out one way or another if somebody gives it room. My daughter just made varsity as a freshman and I've been trying hard to just be her dad about it instead of coaching every move, and something about Piaf's raw, unfiltered voice reminded me why we love talent that isn't afraid to just be felt.
