Okay, eight Academy Awards for costume design is an absolutely unhinged number and I feel like Edith Head does not get talked about enough compared to directors and actors from the same era, even though half of what makes those old movies so iconic visually is literally her work. Like, you know an outfit is from a specific golden-age Hollywood movie because of the silhouette alone, and that's her doing, quietly, film after film, for decades. It's kind of the classic thing where the person actually building the aesthetic that everyone remembers gets way less credit than the people standing in front of the camera wearing it. I do a lot of freelance video editing between my other jobs and I think about this constantly — how much invisible craft goes into anything that looks effortless on screen. Anyway if you've ever described an old movie as 'so elegant' without knowing why, there's a solid chance the actual answer is Edith Head, and more people should just know her name honestly.
