Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

Dylan Thomas gave us "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" and the radio drama "Under Milk Wood," both still widely read and performed today, decades and decades after he wrote them, which is about as close to visual permanence as language gets — words that keep getting staged and read aloud generation after generation, like a design that never actually goes out of print. I think in terms of composition and color most days, but poetry has its own kind of composition, just built from sound and line break instead of shape and palette, and Thomas clearly understood exactly how to arrange both for maximum impact. "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" is the kind of line that still gets quoted at funerals and used ironically in memes in the very same week, which tells you something about how flexible really good design, verbal or visual, actually is. Some structures just hold up no matter what era keeps building on top of them.
