Derek Walcott (1930-2017)

Derek Walcott won the Nobel Prize for poetry and plays out of Saint Lucia, a little island most folks couldn't find on a map, and I think there's something fitting about that, since so much of the best writing I've ever come across in my life came from small, unassuming places rather than the big famous ones everybody already expects greatness from. I'm no poetry scholar, I'll say that plainly, my tastes run more toward the hymnal than Omeros, but I recognize the discipline it takes to make language do more work than it usually does, the way a good preacher can turn a familiar verse into something that hits you fresh on a Sunday you weren't expecting it. Walcott spent a career doing that with an entire region's history and voice, not just his own. It's a reminder I try to pass on to anybody who'll listen: where you're from doesn't put a ceiling on what you're capable of building with what you've got. Sometimes it's exactly the opposite.
