Derek Hough (b. 1985)

Derek Hough has built an entire respected career, Emmy-winning even, around Dancing with the Stars, teaching people with zero professional dance background how to move well enough to perform in front of a live audience, which takes an entirely different kind of patience than choreographing for other trained dancers. I do a fair amount of karaoke myself, unashamedly, and I understand something small about the particular vulnerability of performing something you're not naturally polished at in front of people watching closely. Hough apparently has a gift for getting nervous amateurs to actually trust the process and improve fast enough to survive on live television, which is really a form of caregiving too, in its own way, meeting someone exactly where their skill level actually is instead of where you wish it were. I see families do something similar around a hospice bed sometimes, learning quickly how to show up for someone in a completely unfamiliar situation. Different stage entirely, but the same basic instinct: patient, present teaching, under real pressure.
