Craig Ferguson hosted The Late Late Show for a decade doing this loose, improvisational, kind of gloriously off-script style of late-night comedy that always felt like he was one bad night's sleep away from just saying whatever came into his head — which, having a seven-month-old now, I relate to on a spiritual level I did not expect from late-night television. There's a real skill in that looseness, though, the same way there's a real skill in making a design look effortless when it actually took twenty discarded drafts to get there. Ferguson's version of the format skipped a lot of the stiff, scripted monologue energy other hosts leaned on and just let the strangeness of live conversation carry the show instead. I've been informed by my extremely online friends that this style influenced a whole generation of comedians who came up watching him do it at 12:30 in the morning. Not bad, for someone whose whole brand was basically pretending he wasn't trying that hard.
