Christian Dior (1905-1957)

I'll be straight with you, fashion's never been a world I understood or much cared about, but Christian Dior's story caught my attention anyway because of the timing of it — he built his "New Look" and founded his fashion house right after World War II, at a moment when a lot of industries, not just fashion, were trying to figure out how to rebuild something from a continent that had just been through hell. There's something in that I recognize from my own town's history with steel: an entire industry redefining itself after a period that could've just ended it instead. Dior apparently changed what an entire postwar generation of women wore and how an entire industry operated, which is a bigger swing than most people manage in any field. I still don't know a thing about hemlines or silhouettes, and I'm not about to start learning now at sixty-eight, but I respect anybody who looked at a wrecked landscape and decided to build something ambitious out of it instead of just patching together whatever was left.
