Christian Bale (b. 1974)

Christian Bale treats his own body like a design material, honestly — reshaping himself dramatically from role to role, gaunt for one film and bulked up for the next, in a way that's less about vanity and more like an artist committing fully to whatever the piece requires. The Fighter and American Psycho don't even look like the same species of performance, let alone the same actor, and that range is what actually earned him the Oscar attention, not just the physical extremity of it. I think about commitment like that a lot in my own work, in a much smaller way — how a project only really succeeds when you're willing to throw out what worked last time and start the composition over from nothing. Most actors settle into a persona and refine it forever. Bale seems to actively resist that, rebuilding himself from scratch project after project, which takes a kind of discipline I don't think gets discussed as much as the paycheck or the awards do.
