Reinventing yourself once is hard enough; Charlotte Church basically had to do it in public, growing up as a child prodigy soprano and then building a whole second career as a pop and stage performer once she was no longer, well, a child. I think about reinvention a lot running a small bakery — the first few years I made what I thought people wanted, and it took nearly closing twice before I figured out what the place actually was. Church didn't get that kind of quiet trial and error; she had to grow up and change genres with people already watching and already having decided who she was supposed to be. That's a much harder recipe to adjust once the whole neighborhood already knows your original one by heart. I have a lot of respect for anyone who's willing to risk disappointing the people who loved the first version of them, in service of becoming something more honest to who they actually are now. That takes more nerve than starting from nothing at all.
