Everyone treats 'Jane Eyre' like a stuffy old classic you're forced to read, but honestly it's kind of unhinged in the best way if you actually pay attention — like, the emotional intensity in that book would absolutely go viral in fic form today, no notes. Charlotte Brontë wrote one of the most influential and beloved novels in the English language, and it's wild to me that something written under those constraints, in that era, still hits as hard as it does for readers who weren't born anywhere near that world. I think what actually gets me is imagining how much had to be channeled into just the writing, because there wasn't exactly a version of Brontë posting her thoughts online or venting to a group chat the way I would've. All that intensity had one outlet, and she made it count in a way that's still being read two centuries later. That's kind of the whole appeal of writing something real, honestly — it doesn't need an algorithm to survive, it just needs to actually mean something to somebody.
