Bonnie Tyler (b. 1951)

Bonnie Tyler had one of the best-selling singles of the entire 1980s with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' a song so enormous it's basically become a load-bearing wall of pop culture at this point, the kind of hit that still gets requested at weddings decades later whether the DJ wants to play it or not. I think about longevity like that a lot running a small bakery, where you're constantly hoping one good recipe becomes the thing people keep coming back for years after you first baked it. One perfect, well-timed hit clearly did that for her, in a completely different industry, on a much bigger scale than my cinnamon rolls ever will. My wife Sam, who works ER nights and has very specific music opinions born entirely out of exhaustion, considers that song nearly sacred, which tells you something about a hit powerful enough to matter to someone with zero patience left for anything mediocre. Some things earn their staying power fair and square, one unforgettable chorus at a time.
