Bonnie Blair (b. 1964)

Bonnie Blair won five Olympic gold medals in speed skating, which puts her among the most decorated athletes in Winter Olympics history, and also makes me think about how insane it is that we expect people to peak, medal, and retire gracefully all before 30. Five golds is not luck, that's years of 5 a.m. practices nobody posted about. I don't skate — my only 'training regimen' is whatever fitness trend TikTok convinces me to try for exactly one month — but I respect discipline that specific and that repeated. It's the kind of achievement that looks effortless from the outside and is actually just relentless, unglamorous repetition, which, relatable, minus the gold medals. There's a version of my own life in that too: nobody sees the three jobs, they just see whichever five minutes I posted. Blair's medals are proof the boring, invisible part of the work is the actual work. I find that oddly comforting when my own invisible parts feel like they're taking forever to add up to anything.
