Every time someone brings up 'Amélie' I have to resist making the same joke about how it single-handedly convinced an entire generation of Americans that Paris runs on whimsy and good lighting, but here we are, I made it anyway. Audrey Tautou became internationally known for that role, and honestly, credit where it's due — bringing warmth and charm to French cinema on a genuinely worldwide scale is not a small thing, especially in an industry where most non-English-language performers barely get discovered outside their own country at all. I think about that a lot actually, in a completely different context, because I watch my parents' generation of immigrants struggle to get any of their own culture's stories in front of an American audience, and then here's a case where the culture crossed over cleanly and got embraced rather than flattened into a stereotype. Tautou didn't just star in a French film that did well; she became a specific, beloved reference point for an entire style of cinema, internationally, which is a much rarer localization success than it sounds like on paper.
