Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)

Everyone knows Audrey Hepburn from 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and 'Roman Holiday,' the iconic old-Hollywood stuff, but what actually gets me is that she spent a big chunk of her life after that as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador doing humanitarian work. Like, she had the fame locked in already, she didn't need to do anything else, and she chose to spend real years of her life on that instead. I don't know her personal reasons, obviously, I'm not going to pretend I do, but there's something about someone using an already-secure platform to actually show up for people in crisis, rather than just attaching their name to a cause for a photo, that hits differently when your own family has been on the other side of that kind of aid at some point. My parents fled Baghdad in 2006; I grew up hearing about which organizations actually helped and which just showed up for the cameras. I have no idea which category her work fell into specifically, but the years-long commitment part, at least, says something real.
