Arthur Conan Doyle's real achievement, I would argue, is not simply inventing a clever detective but inventing the modern detective story's underlying method — Holmes's deductions are essentially a dramatized version of the scientific method, observation followed by rigorous inference, dressed up as entertainment. As a physicist, I find that structural achievement more interesting than the character's popularity alone, considerable as that popularity has been for well over a century now. Doyle managed to make careful, evidence-based reasoning genuinely thrilling to a mass audience, which is a rarer trick than most literary historians credit him for; scientists spend entire careers trying and failing to make rigor sound exciting to anyone outside the field. I mentored a great many graduate students over thirty-eight years, and I occasionally recommended the Holmes stories to the ones struggling to understand why methodology matters as much as the answer itself. Whatever Doyle's own feelings about his most famous creation later in life, he built something genuinely durable: a character who taught generations of readers to value careful observation, however unglamorous the actual habit is.
