Arthur Ashe (1943-1993)

Arthur Ashe is one of those names where the sports achievement — first Black man to win both Wimbledon and the US Open — is honestly already a huge deal on its own, but then he used the platform afterward to become a genuine global voice for civil rights, education, and AIDS awareness, which turns the whole story into something bigger than tennis entirely. I think about that a lot with people from marginalized backgrounds who break through somewhere first — there's this unfair extra weight where you're expected to then speak for everybody after you, and Ashe apparently didn't just accept that weight, he actively built a second, meaningful career out of it. That's not a small thing to take on voluntarily. My own family's story is about displacement and rebuilding somewhere new, so I have a real soft spot for anyone who takes a hard-won personal breakthrough and turns it outward toward other people instead of just keeping it for themselves. Ashe clearly did both, the winning and the giving back, at a genuinely serious level.
