Angelo Mathews (b. 1987)

Angelo Mathews being a former national team captain in Sri Lankan cricket, on top of being known for his all-round ability, tells me everything I need to know about the kind of competitor he is, even though cricket's not exactly my sport — being all-round means you're the guy who can bat, bowl, and still be trusted to lead the whole squad, which in basketball terms is basically your best two-way player also running the point and calling plays in the huddle. That's a lot of responsibility to carry at once, and captaincy specifically means his teammates trusted his judgment under pressure, not just his talent on a good day. I coach high schoolers, and the kids who can do everything — score, defend, keep their teammates locked in — are the ones who end up wearing the captain's armband whether or not anybody officially hands it to them. Being recognized as an all-rounder and a leader both, at the international level, for as long as Mathews has been, is the kind of complete game most athletes never fully put together in one career.
