Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)

Every so often there's a player who doesn't just win the game, she changes who's allowed to play it at all, and that's Amelia Earhart to me — first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, a genuine trailblazer for women in aviation. I think about that word 'trailblazer' a lot in my own gym, watching girls come up through programs that barely existed a generation ago, doors that somebody else had to force open first before it ever got easier for the ones who came after. My own daughter just made varsity as a freshman, and I try hard to remember that opportunity like that didn't just appear — somebody, somewhere, further back than she'll ever know, had to be first and take the actual risk of it. Earhart wasn't just chasing a personal record when she made that flight; she was proving the whole category of 'woman aviator' could exist at the highest level, which is a heavier kind of pressure than any single game I've ever coached under. That's the real weight behind 'first.'
