I'm going to skip the joke on this one, because Amelia Boynton Robinson's story doesn't really leave room for one and honestly shouldn't. She helped lead the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march and dedicated her entire life to voting rights, which is the kind of commitment that spans decades, not a single dramatic moment, even though the march itself is the part everyone pictures. My parents immigrated here from Bangalore in the '80s, and the reason their whole story worked at all is that other people, before them, fought hard for the basic rights that made an immigrant family's rise even possible in this country. I know that colors how I read stories like hers — I can't be neutral about someone who spent a lifetime widening the door that my own family eventually walked through. It's easy for me to be glib about most things, comedy's basically my whole personality, but there's a category of person whose life's work I just try to describe accurately and get out of the way of, and Boynton Robinson is squarely in that category.
