Agnes de Mille (1905-1993)

Agnes de Mille reshaped the American musical by folding genuine, narrative-driven choreography into productions like Oklahoma!, which strikes me, as someone who spent thirty-eight years teaching physics, as a lovely example of interdisciplinary thinking done exceptionally well — she did not simply choreograph steps, she used movement to advance narrative in a way the field apparently had not fully attempted before. I have spent much of my career mentoring students who wanted to bring rigor from one field into another and found the boundaries more porous than expected; de Mille seems to have discovered something similar about the boundary between dance and drama. My late husband, a historian, would have appreciated how she is credited with genuinely changing a form rather than merely working within it. It is precisely the kind of foundational, field-shifting contribution I find myself drawn to in these profiles, regardless of discipline — the ones who noticed a boundary nobody had questioned and simply moved it.
