Vernon Jordan (1935-2021)
Vernon Jordan spent decades leading the National Urban League and then advising presidents, all in service of expanding real economic opportunity for Black Americans, and I respect that kind of work specifically because economic opportunity is the actual thing β not symbolic gestures, but whether a person can get a decent job and keep it. I've worked packing houses, fast food, call centers, hotel housekeeping, retail, and weekend cleaning jobs over the years, so I know exactly how much difference real structural opportunity makes versus just being told to work harder. Jordan apparently spent his whole career on the structural side of that problem instead of settling for easier, more visible wins. I don't trust either political party to have lived a life like mine, but I do trust people whose actual life's work was expanding real economic access for people who'd been locked out of it, and from what I understand, that's exactly what he did, consistently, for a long career.
Vernon Davis (b. 1984)
I don't know much about professional football, having raised my four on a schoolteacher's salary where extra channels on the television weren't in the budget, but I do know something about young people who use whatever platform they're given to help others, and that's what caught my eye about this tight end. Making the Pro Bowl is one kind of achievement, plenty of athletes manage that, but turning around and putting real effort behind arts and STEM programs for children is another thing entirely, and it's the harder one to sustain once the cheering stops. I had a former student go on to some athletic success in college years back, and what I remember proudest isn't the trophies, it's that he came back every summer to help coach the younger kids at the rec league for free. That's the real test of character, what a person does with their good fortune once it's arrived. Seems like this young man passed that test, and I hope he keeps at it.
Vernon Reid (b. 1958)
As someone who has definitely tried and failed to be interesting on a guitar, I have deep respect for Vernon Reid, who co-founded Living Colour and then just refused to play by anybody's genre rules, which if you know the music industry is basically the hardest possible move β way harder than just being good at one thing. Everybody wants you in a lane; he built his own highway. It's a very startup-founder energy actually, the whole 'nobody asked for this specific combination but now it's essential' thing, except his product still slaps forty years later, which is more than I can say for the app I built in my twenties that died a quiet death owing me money on a personal loan. There's something very freeing about an artist whose whole legacy is basically 'you said this couldn't blend, and I blended it anyway.' Anyway if you haven't listened to Living Colour recently, fix that today. This one's a genuine hall-of-fame level guitarist and it's not close.
