Paula Abdul (b. 1962)
Paula Abdul was a Grammy-winning singer and choreographer before most people my kids' age ever knew her as a judge on American Idol, which tells you something about how many separate careers one person can actually stack up over time if they keep working. Singer, choreographer, television personality β that's three distinct skill sets, three different paychecks, sequentially or sometimes all at once, and I know a little something about needing more than one income stream just to make a life work. Not everyone who juggles multiple jobs is doing it out of hardship the way I have been for twenty years, but the hustle itself, the willingness to keep reinventing what you get paid for, that part I recognize. Choreography is genuinely hard, physical work too, whatever the TV persona might suggest to somebody who only ever saw her behind a judge's table. People who put in decades across multiple lanes like that usually worked harder than the highlight reel ever shows.
Paula Radcliffe (b. 1973)
Paula Radcliffe set a marathon world record that stood for well over a decade, which if you think about it in mill terms is like holding a plant production record for years running, nobody else in the whole industry able to touch it no matter how hard they tried. That's not luck, that's grinding, repetitive training, mile after mile, year after year, the kind of unglamorous physical work I understand a lot better than I understand most celebrity news. Donna and I walk every evening now on doctor's orders after my stents, nowhere near marathon pace, but I respect anybody who put in that kind of physical labor day after day to get somewhere that lasted. A record standing over a decade means the work she put in was genuinely ahead of everybody else's, not just for a season, for years. I don't follow track and field much, never have, but that kind of sustained excellence earns my respect the same way a good welder or a good foreman does.
Paula Patton (b. 1975)
Paula Patton's been in some pictures I actually have heard of β that Mission Impossible one my grandkids made me watch, and Precious, which is a hard picture but an important one, from what I understand. She's known for range, being able to do the big action stuff and the serious dramatic stuff too, and that's not nothing. I had a student once, years back, who could switch from being the class clown to the most serious little debater you ever saw in the span of a recess bell, and I always thought that kind of range in a person was a gift, not a trick. Miss Patton apparently has that same gift, just with cameras pointed at her instead of a spelling test. I don't go to the picture shows much anymore β the drive into town's gotten longer as I've gotten older, or maybe the town's just further than it used to be β but I appreciate hearing about performers who can do more than one thing well. That's rarer than folks give it credit for.
