Jordan Peele (b. 1979)

Jordan Peele went from being one half of a well-known sketch comedy duo to basically reinventing socially conscious horror as a genre with Get Out and Us, which is such a wild pivot that it still surprises me a little every time I think about it. Comedy and horror actually share more structural DNA than people assume, both depend entirely on precise timing, on knowing exactly when to make an audience uncomfortable and exactly how long to hold it there, so maybe the jump wasn't as strange as it first looks from the outside. What actually gets me about his films specifically is that they use genre conventions everybody already knows to sneak in commentary that a straight drama might get too preachy delivering directly. I've watched a lot of horror that's just trying to make you jump, and it's a completely different experience watching something built that carefully, where every unsettling choice is actually doing work instead of just being loud. Peele basically proved an entire audience was hungry for that and nobody else had bothered making it yet.

Jordan Spieth (b. 1993)

Jordan Spieth won three of professional golf's four major championships, which is an enormous accomplishment in a sport that's absolutely merciless about small mistakes compounding over four long days. Golf's never been my sport, my wife Sam is far more into it than I am, but I appreciate anything built on that much precision and patience, the same instincts that keep a laminated dough from falling apart if you rush even one fold. Winning three majors puts him in genuinely rare company, and doing it as young as he did adds its own kind of pressure most of us never have to face in our own careers β€” succeeding early enough that the whole rest of your life gets measured against it. I think about that a little with the bakery too, actually, since our first couple of years got a certain amount of attention that then became its own quiet weight to live up to. Early success is a real gift, but it comes with strings nobody warns you about until you're already holding them.

Jordan Fisher (b. 1994)

Jordan Fisher has done about three careers' worth of work by the time most folks are settling into their first real job β€” Broadway's Hamilton, which from what my grandkids tell me is about as demanding a show as exists, and then winning Dancing with the Stars on top of that. I don't know his music the way my grandchildren do, but I do know what it looks like when somebody's actually put the hours in versus somebody who got lucky once and coasted on it, and everything about a rΓ©sumΓ© like his says hours, not luck. I had a former student, oh, must be fifteen years back now, who could sing like an angel and never did a lick of work to go with the gift, and it never went anywhere for her, which still makes me sad when I think of it. Talent's the seed. Somebody's still got to water it every single day for years before anything worth having grows up out of it. Sounds like Jordan Fisher understood that a lot younger than most people ever do.
