Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014)

Gabriel García Márquez wrote about a family that stretched across a hundred years in one town, all those generations tangled up together, and I think that's why the book stuck with people the way it did — most families are exactly that messy and connected whether or not anyone ever writes it down. He won the Nobel Prize for it, which is about as far from where I come from as you can get, but the story itself, about one family just enduring through generation after generation of hard luck and small miracles, that part I understood right away. My own family's been picking and packing produce in the Central Valley for three generations, and nobody's ever going to put us in a novel, but I know what it means to watch the same stubbornness and the same debts pass down a family line. García Márquez took that ordinary, universal thing — a family just trying to survive its own history — and made the whole world pay attention to it. That's not luck either. That's noticing what's actually in front of you and refusing to look away.

Gabriel Byrne (b. 1950)

Gabriel Byrne built a career that's lasted across genres most actors never manage to survive both of — the tense ensemble crime of The Usual Suspects and the quiet, almost unbearably intimate therapy-office drama of In Treatment, two completely different muscles, both exercised at a high level. Then on top of that he served as Ireland's Cultural Ambassador to the U.S., which tells you the guy wasn't just chasing his own next role, he was actually representing something bigger than himself for a while. I always tell my players that longevity in anything, sports or otherwise, comes from being able to adjust your game as the situation changes instead of running the same one play forever. Byrne clearly figured that out early — he didn't get boxed into one type of role and just ride it out. You want a real career, the kind that's still going strong decades in? Study people like him. It's never about one big shot. It's about staying useful, and staying yourself, through every different phase of the game.

Gabriel Iglesias (b. 1976)

Gabriel Iglesias has Netflix specials and arena tours, and I have a handful of open mics where the bartender was my biggest fan for exactly one Tuesday in 2022, so let's just say we're at different stages of the same career, technically. But high-energy stand-up like his is genuinely a different skill set than the deadpan, slow-burn stuff a lot of comics my age try to do, and filling arenas with pure energetic delivery night after night is its own kind of athletic feat, not just a joke-writing one. I've bombed hard enough on stage to know exactly how much nerve it takes to commit fully to a bit instead of hedging it, and Iglesias built an entire career on that kind of full commitment, no half-measures, no ironic distance from his own material. I still get nervous just thinking about doing five minutes at an open mic. The man's out here doing full arenas on pure charisma and stagecraft. Respect, genuinely, from somebody who knows exactly how hard that stage actually is, even at open-mic scale.
